Lesson Five

The Pure Land Teaching by Mipham Rinpoche

A commentary by Khenpo Sodargye Rinpoche

Lesson Five

If one thinks: The scripture also indicates the necessity of amassing boundless merits. As merit is the main cause for realizing aspirations, without a vast accumulation of merit, rebirth in Sukhavati will not happen by wishing for it alone.

Refutation: Generally speaking, it is merit that causes the maturation of an aspiration; yet, merit itself is also subject to the individual forces of sentient beings – their karmic tendencies, capacities, and circumstances – such that it will result in an instantaneous rebirth

Lesson Four

The Pure Land Teaching by Mipham Rinpoche

A commentary by Khenpo Sodargye Rinpoche

Lesson Four

Someone may believe: The Sukhavati surpasses other pure lands, and those who are reborn there possess numerous qualities such as never-failing memory, samadhi, and clairvoyance. It follows that unless one is a sage, one cannot possibly be reborn in Sukhavati.

Refute: Now that you have accepted that the scripture says all beings in Sukhavati possess excellent qualities, why do you choose to ignore the causes for attaining rebirth, which are also taught in the scriptures? Beings reborn in Sukhavati can manifest incredible

Relying on skillful methods means to employ impressive miraculous powers to lead them onto the Buddhist path.  Relying on logical reasoning means to use valid analysis to

Pure Land Teaching – the Dharma Sun that Opens Faith

Jamgon Ju Mipham Gyatso

Lesson Two

Essentially, we must generate an unequivocal conviction in Buddha Amitabha and his Pure Land, understanding that all the excellent qualities of Sukhavati are manifested solely through the power of Buddha Amitabha’s vows and wisdom.  The Sutra of Deathless Drumbeat says: “Any fortunate man or woman with strong faith, truthful understanding, and reverence will be reborn in Sukhavati.” Also, the Sutra of Pure Land says: “Even if all sentient beings were to become Buddhas with perfectly pure wisdom, who extolled the merits of

Lesson One

The Pure Land Teaching by Mipham Rinpoche

A commentary by Khenpo Sodargye Rinpoche

Foreword

The Pure Land Teaching by Mipham Rinpoche is a teaching on Pure Land practice in Tibetan Buddhism. It is a quintessential essence that Mipham Rinpoche captured from the vast and deep ocean of scriptures with his inconceivable wisdom, akin to the sublimated cream extracted from an ocean of milk.

Previously, many people considered Tibetan Buddhism and Han Buddhism to be incompatible and at odds with each other, especially in the case of the Pure Land School, which never seemed to have found a place in
