Tibetan Attire IV

Tibetan Attire IV, the fourth volume in the Tibetan Attire & Culture Series initiated by Khenpo Sodargye Rinpoche, comprehensively documents the traditional costumes of the Gyarong region—historically home to the Eighteen Chiefdoms—as well as the distinctive costume traditions of the Baima, Ersu, and Tosu Tibetan communities.

From the vibrant headscarves worn by Gyarong women and the feathered felt hats of the Baima to the intricately embroidered aprons of Tosu women, these costumes reveal the distinct character of each community. Geography and altitude also play a defining role: high-elevation communities favor wool and yak down, while hemp, silk, cotton, and other textiles are more common in other lower-lying areas.

The book chronicles more than twenty representative costume traditions, exploring how clothing reflects local life and identity. Specific garments and braiding styles can signal marital status, mourning, or the transition to adulthood, while local terminology, proverbs, and folk songs offer deeper cultural insights. The volume is illustrated throughout with exquisite on-location photography. As these traditions gradually fade, this record aims to support their preservation and transmission.
